![]() This week we have been practicing our "I can find similarities between tow or more characters.... (RL5.3)" We took time to read a great book by Judith Viorist called Rosie and Michael. This is the same author that wrote Alexendar and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The book illustrates two characters by describing why they are friends. Once the kids were done reading they went into groups and compared and contrasted the characters using our amazing dry erase tables.

![]() We have just begun our Daily 5 and CAFE adventure! This is the reading and writing program implemented in my classroom. I am deeply committed to what research says is the most beneficial for students to become readers, writers and lifelong learners. As a result, the structure of my literacy block may look and sound a little different and I am EXCITED! It won’t be long until you hear your child talking about “The Daily Five.” The purpose of this letter is to fill you in on what The Daily Five is all about, so you don’t have to nod your head while wondering what in the world your child is referring to. The Daily Five is a way of structuring the reading block so every student is independently engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. These research based tasks are ones that will have the biggest impact on student reading and writing achievement, as well as help foster children who love to read and write. Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while I provide focused, intense instruction to individuals and small groups of students. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks. The choices will be:
Students today began writing there "how to." writings. In order for students to gain a better understand of what to write they began by video tapping themselves making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. After the students recorded themselves, they enjoyed a snack with friends. Students then took their video and will write a step by step guide on how to make a peanut butter in jelly. We will focus on the 6 Trait Model and transition words.
The Kids had so much fun with the popcorn company. They advertising department did a wonderful job at their morning announcements and commercials. It led to over $200 in sales. Popping day was exciting and exhausting, but the kids defiantly learned a lot about companies. The profit will pay for Pizza from Pizza Hut next week. ![]() This week students learned about branding a company and what a slogan was. Students worked in teams to come up with a great name. After the votes came in it was decided that our company will be Popp'n Hopp'n Popcorn where there is "No stopp'n delicious popcorn." We used the same process to decide on our logo. Each student designed and colored a logo and we voted. The final logo is seen above, but you can watch the video below for all of the great designs. Over the past month our fifth grade class has been learning more about the natural resources that have been found in Kansas. There were several lessons about oil and it's productions. Students practiced non-fiction reading and informative writing as they explored what makes Kansas Strong. The program that we did is a free resource offered by Kansas Strong. They made teaching this so easy. A co-worker and I attended the one day workshop where they taught us how to teach it, provided a huge box of all the materials we would need, sent home the plans, plus paid us for our time. It was time well spent. Our students learned how oil was made and found. One of the last modules was to use PBL to build their own oil derrick. The kids had to analyze cost and durability. It was a fun day. Check out their learning and defiantly check out Kansas Strong. ![]() The fifth grade is starting our own “Popcorn Company!” Not only is this an exciting unit, it covers reading, writing, math, and social studies standards required for 5th grade. The students will work cooperatively to form a company that will advertise, produce, sell, and deliver popcorn. We are beginning the unit this week and are planning on having our big “Poppin’ Day” on Thursday, May 10th. Every child will be involved in a department within our company. Students will learn about the importance of working together with others to make our company be a success. This week ask that you take time to fill out a job application for our company that will be coming home later this week. On Friday, April 17th, every child will be interviewing for a job within our company. We will have special guests from the real business world who will be conducting the interviews. It's going to be loads on fun so watch for more details! Our Fifth Grade class is beginning to hatch eggs. They will arrive tomorrow. We wanted a way to make sure that everyone was involved, so we have created the Daily Chicken Chatter. It is a 21 day journey for your to follow. Students will do a daily news cast that informs everyone Egg-actly what is going on inside the egg. Students from any classroom will be able to watch video, read, learn and ask questions to the students who report daily.
Please check it out and follow us. I'm excited for the kids and they are excited to share. http://chickenchatter.weebly.com/ or click on the link above to take you their.
So over Spring Break, while the rest of the teaching world was off to relax, teachers from all over the state gathered to learn and share ideas. I was given the opportunity to share some of the great things that are going on in my room. I promised everyone a link to the prezi so here it is....
