Over the past month our fifth grade class has been learning more about the natural resources that have been found in Kansas. There were several lessons about oil and it's productions. Students practiced non-fiction reading and informative writing as they explored what makes Kansas Strong. The program that we did is a free resource offered by Kansas Strong. They made teaching this so easy. A co-worker and I attended the one day workshop where they taught us how to teach it, provided a huge box of all the materials we would need, sent home the plans, plus paid us for our time. It was time well spent.
Our students learned how oil was made and found. One of the last modules was to use PBL to build their own oil derrick. The kids had to analyze cost and durability. It was a fun day. Check out their learning and defiantly check out Kansas Strong.
